Battery Separator | Solutions

H&V develops battery separator solutions across the industry's broadest range of chemistries. We choose the precise material and technique to formulate the right separator for your unique battery requirements.

VALVE REGULATED LEAD ACID (AGM)

EnergyGuardTM
A new high-strength VRLA separator, EnergyGuard is a combination material that blends the best properties of microglass and the added strength of synthetic fiber. The separator has significantly higher puncture resistance that leads to a lower incidence of shorting in batteries produced with all grid types.

Sealed Lead Acid
Applied to uninterruptible power systems, emergency lighting, telecommunications and other applications, the Hovosorb® sealed lead acid microglass separator exhibits tight control over basis weight and thickness as well as a high degree of purity and low leachates.

Specialty Separators
H&V produces fibrous separators for lithium thionyl chloride, zinc air cells, and other specialty batteries. We are actively developing separators for emerging advanced battery systems and electrochemical applications.

Hovosorb II
This absorptive separator material for sealed lead acid batteries allows you to "fill and spill" with immediate recombination. Hovosorb II's highly engineered patented process generates natural electrolyte voids. Using this remarkable material and the fill and spill method, you should always have consistent, reliable battery performance. Hovosorb II simplifies your design and production process, totally eliminating the need for precision filling equipment.

NON-VRLA

Nickel Metal Hydride
H&V manufactures nonwoven, meltblown, and composite battery separators for cylindrical and prismatic cells, specifically suited for Portable Power and Motive Power applications. Polyolefin fibrous separators are treated with permanent surface treatment for proven hydrophilic properties in demanding high temperature applications. Fine fiber technology and uniform web forming techniques assure reliable performance. Battery separators are manufactured to thickness and basis weight and porosity specifications per your requirements.

Nickel Cadmium
Multi-layered nonwovens in nylon, polyolefin, or blends are produced using the latest fine fiber technology. Thickness and basis weight and pore structure are tailored to your specific needs. High temperature polymers are available for demanding high temperature or long life applications.

Alkaline Manganese
H&V offers a wide range of separators for AAAA - F size Alkaline MnO2 batteries. These separators incorporate blends of the finest available mini fibers, including PVA, Rayon, Vinyon, and Cellulosics. Precise control is maintained over basis weight, thickness, pore structure, purity, and absorbency characteristics. New "tight pore" structure separators are available for low mercury applications. H&V also offers Cellophane laminated separators for rechargeable and primary applications.

Emerging Technologies
H&V continues to stay abreast of technology shifts in the power source field. Recognizing that many new technologies are years from commercial reality, H&V maintains its dedication to tomorrow's needs. Substantial resources are expended in our work with electrochemical device designers in commercial, military, and academic endeavors. Recent projects include developments for EC Capacitors, Fuel Cells, Electrode Substrates, and Lithium Batteries. And H&V's capabilities extend beyond separators. Our diverse manufacturing resources allow us to produce substrates from carbons, organic, and inorganic particulate. Our coating and lamination technology, surface treatment, and fiber technology combine to give us the ability to work on the "Active" side of the electrochemical spectrum as well as the more passive, yet critical, separator side. H&V has extensively equipped R&D laboratories and pilot manufacturing facilities that provide a solid base for theoretical research work. We will work on a contract basis or in joint partnership with commercial developers or will perform work under research grants with academic or government institutions.
