Q) How do you determine the degree of cure of ACR media?
A) ACR media describes filter media that is cured during manufacture to a higher level than standard “B Staged” media. The degree of cure is defined as the ratio of “as is” wet mullen (or ‘off the roll’) over “fully cured” wet mullen. There are three general levels of cure that are currently used in the industry:
• 30% cure–requires somewhat reduced curing in the pleating process
• 50% cure–requires much less curing in the pleating process, will have very little off gassing during cure
• 70% cure–does not require additional curing in the pleating process, does not off gas during cure, may require additional pleat tension control during processing
Q) What is a wire side mark?
A) A wire side mark is a line that H&V puts on the downstream side of the media to indicate which side should be oriented to the ‘clean’ or downstream side of the oil flow. The wire mark color and spacing is specific to an individual grade, but standard spacing is on two inch centers, and standard colors for the line mark are either black or blue ink.
Q) What is the usual test standard used to evaluate oil filter media?
A) ISO 4548-12 is a globally accepted test standards for either flat sheet or element evaluation of oil filter media or filters.
Q) Why are some oil media rated efficiencies at 50% and others at 95%?
A) It really is only a matter of historical preference. European markets have preferred to specify efficiencies at a 50% level, while US markets have preferred to specify efficiencies at a higher level (many times 95%). In most cases, these tests identify the same media and level of filtration efficiency, but at different points along a curve.
Q) How do synthetics and glass help oil filter media?
A) Synthetic (polyester) fiber does not degrade on hot oil. It increases the durability of the filter media when exposed to hot oil. Glass fiber, specifically microfiber glass, increases the surface area of the filter media allowing much higher efficiencies without significant increases in media restriction.
